About the event

From 27 March to 1 November 2026, the renovated spaces of Forte Leopoldo I in Forte dei Marmi host an exhibition on Neapolitan painting after Caravaggio, who was in Naples in 1606–1607 and 1609–1610. It is promoted by the Comune di Forte dei Marmi and the Fondazione Villa Bertelli, in collaboration with the Fondazione Giuseppe e Margaret De Vito, and curated by art historian Nadia Bastogi.

Thirty-nine paintings collected by Giuseppe de Vito, a collector and scholar of the period, are shown in Tuscany for the first time. They follow the path from the first interpreters of Caravaggesque naturalism to artists who reworked its language towards classicism and the Baroque. Unpublished documents and other materials give a closer look at the collector himself.

The layout, designed by architect Marco Francesconi, is chronological but also points out thematic links between artists and works. The show is accompanied by side events that invite visitors to compare these works with Caravaggesque painting in the Lucca area, including Pietro Paolini, Simone del Tintore, Pietro Ricchi and Girolamo Scaglia.

About Forte dei Marmi

Forte dei Marmi takes its name from the small fort in Piazza Garibaldi, completed in 1788 under Grand Duke Peter Leopold to guard the beach where marble from the Apuan Alps was stored and shipped. The town belonged to Pietrasanta until 26 April 1914, when it became a comune of its own.
