Good for HistoryCultureOld townVillagesHikingViews

Seravezza sits at the mouth of a valley in the Apuan Alps, where the Serra and Vezza streams meet to form the Versilia river, the river that gave the whole area its name. The old town is small and stony, and the comune reaches from the mountains down to Querceta on the Aurelia, next to Forte dei Marmi.

Its main building is the Palazzo Mediceo, built for Cosimo I de' Medici in the mid-16th century at a spot chosen to oversee the quarries and mines. Since 2013 it has been one of the 14 parts of the UNESCO site Medici Villas and Gardens in Tuscany; today it holds the museum of work and folk traditions of historic Versilia, the library and temporary exhibitions.

Marble shaped the town. Michelangelo came in 1517 to look for marble on Monte Altissimo, the mountain above the valley, and quarrying has gone on ever since. On the slope at Azzano, the Pieve della Cappella, built in marble before the year 1000, looks across to the quarries on one side and the sea on the other.

Seravezza suits people interested in history and marble, walkers heading into the Apuan Alps, and anyone who wants a quieter base a few kilometres from the beach.
