Alta Versilia

Alta Versilia is the mountain side of the region: the comuni of Seravezza and Stazzema, on the seaward slopes of the Apuan Alps, where marble is still quarried. Much of the range is protected by the Parco naturale regionale delle Alpi Apuane, set up by Tuscany in 1985 and part of the UNESCO Global Geoparks network since 2012; its headquarters are in Stazzema.

Seravezza sits where the Serra and Vezza streams meet to form the Versilia river. Cosimo I de' Medici built the Palazzo Mediceo here to follow the quarries and mines he had revived; since 2013 it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site with the other Medici villas of Tuscany and houses a museum of local work and traditions, marble quarrying first. The comune also takes in Querceta down on the plain, where the Forte dei Marmi-Seravezza-Querceta station stands.

Stazzema is the only comune of Versilia that lies entirely in the mountains: seventeen villages between 107 m and the 1,858 m summit of the Pania della Croce. Inside Monte Corchia, the Antro del Corchia cave system runs for more than 80 km and 1,210 m deep; about 2 km of it is open to visitors.

On 12 August 1944 SS troops surrounded the village of Sant'Anna di Stazzema and killed 560 people, many of them children, in little more than three hours. The hillside around it has been the Parco Nazionale della Pace since a law of 2000.
